Meet Awvee Storey!

Chicago Sky Foundation Executive Director  & NBA Vet

Awvee Storey is the Executive Director of the Chicago Sky Foundation, where he works to create opportunities for young people in Chicago through initiatives focused on economic development, health and wellness, youth education, and women’s empowerment. Under his leadership, the foundation offers mentorship and resources to help young people succeed, both on and off the court.

Awvee was born and raised in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood before moving to the West Side near Little Italy and UIC. His upbringing in these neighborhoods gave him a strong connection to the city and a firsthand understanding of the challenges young people face. Awvee started high school at Proviso West and finished his education at New Hampton Prep in New Hampshire. He began his college career at the University of Illinois, then transferred to Arizona State University, where he graduated with a double major in Communication and Sociology.

Awvee’s basketball career has played an important role in shaping his life. After a successful collegiate career, he went on to play in the NBA and overseas. These experiences taught him valuable lessons in navigating different environments, building relationships, and working as part of a team—skills that are central to his leadership
today.

Through programs like the Chicago Sky Basketball Academy, small business cohorts, coaches clinics, financial and reading literacy programs, girls mentorship programs, S.T.E.M. programs, basketball camps and clinics, Awvee and the foundation aim to provide young people with the skills and confidence they need to thrive. A key focus is exposure to different environments, which Awvee believes is crucial for helping youth develop imagination, understanding, and a desire to challenge themselves. He recalls how exposure to new spaces helped him grow and fuel his ambition to not only be in those spaces but to excel in them.
